My dad served 22 years in the Royal Signals. He is sadly no longer with us but my memory of growing up was him going into the mess on Christmas morning and bringing back any soldier who was not on duty and unable to go home for Christmas. It was the joy of having a new face around the table and to get to know them. I think of the serving soldiers and veterans frequently and especially at Christmas.
